Mining and Resource Security in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan mining is growing fast, and most of it happens a long drive from the nearest town. Potash sites, laydown yards, quarries and exploration camps hold millions of dollars in equipment, fuel and copper, often with nobody around at night. Secure Defence provides mining security in Saskatoon and across the province, protecting mine and resource sites with live video monitoring. Trained, licensed operators watch your cameras 24/7 and act the moment someone crosses your fence line.

Who Secure Defence is and how we work

We are a live video monitoring company with 11 years in security. The work happens in two places. Our trained, licensed operators watch every site from our own command centre in Richmond, BC, around the clock. On the ground in Saskatchewan, a local salesperson plans your coverage and a local technician installs and services the equipment.

We serve all of Western Canada, including BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, with Vancouver as our main market. We are award-winning, we protect 500+ customers and 1,000+ sites across Western Canada, and The Globe and Mail and BIV named us the Fastest Growing Security Company in Canada in 2025 and 2026. Our roots are in construction, logistics and industrial yards, which share the same problems as resource sites: big open ground, expensive equipment and long, quiet nights.

Saskatchewan's resource boom, by the numbers

The Government of Saskatchewan reported mineral sales of $12.8 billion in 2025, up 19%. Potash sales reached $9.3 billion and uranium hit a record $3.2 billion. Mining investment of $6.7 billion made up a quarter of the national total, and exploration spending is expected to rise to $483 million in 2026 (Government of Saskatchewan, May 7, 2026). The province expects new copper, zinc and lithium production by the end of 2026.

Closer to Saskatoon, BHP's Jansen potash project east of the city is targeting first production from Stage 1 in mid-2027 (BHP, June 2026), and Nutrien runs its head office in Saskatoon. All that building means more contractors, more laydown yards, more fuel and more copper cable spread across the province, and that draws thieves.

Risks we watch for

Equipment and vehicle theft

from laydown areas, quarries and pit yards

Unauthorized access

to active sites, which is a safety problem as much as a security one

Material theft

including copper cable, scrap, fuel and stored product

Vandalism and tampering

with equipment, fences and power systems

Fire

in processing buildings, storage areas and around fuel

Remote, unmanned sites

that guards can't reach or patrol well

How live monitoring works on a resource site

Smart cameras detect people and vehicles across the site. Cameras are placed to cover the gate, the fence line and the yard, day and night. On big perimeters and remote ground, thermal and long-range cameras pick up people and vehicles well beyond the reach of site lighting, and an operator verifies what they see before anything else happens. When something triggers, an operator in our command centre looks at the live picture right away.

If it's your crew or a contractor on the schedule, we log it. If it's a pickup at the back gate at 3 am, the operator speaks through the site speaker and tells them they are being watched. If they keep going, the siren and lights come on, and once a crime is confirmed we call for Verified Police Response or alert your own site security, with live details to pass along.

Every alert is checked by a person, which means a 1-minute verified response and zero false alarms. Clients see 98%+ overall crime reduction. See our live video monitoring page for more.

Sites we cover

Mine sites and exploration camps.

Gate areas, camp parking, core sheds and fuel tanks.

Potash and processing plants.

Perimeter, rail spurs, loadout areas and storage, tied into your existing alarms, sensors and access control. Biometric readers and LPR (licence plate recognition) log who comes and goes.

Equipment and laydown yards.

Contractor yards in the North Industrial area or along the highways out of Saskatoon, where machinery and materials sit for months. GPS and cargo tracking can follow equipment that moves between sites.

Quarries and aggregate pits.

Loaders, crushers and scale houses that sit unattended overnight and on weekends.

Transportation and supply infrastructure.

Rail sidings, truck staging areas and storage near highways.

Power, cold and distance

Many resource sites have no grid power. That's where our solar camera towers come in. We only use towers for remote sites with no power, and they can be running within 24 hours. The 2-week battery holds through a Saskatchewan winter, and all our equipment is rated to -40 C. Learn more about off-grid solutions.

Where there is power, pole cameras are live in 5 to 7 days and come with a 24-hour backup power system. Existing camera systems can usually be connected the same day for our live video monitoring service.

Fire and safety

Fire and smoke detection can be added to your cameras with our early fire detection service, so an operator can flag a fire in a storage building or fuel area while no one is on site. Live cameras also help you see who is on site after hours, which supports your safety plan.

Evidence and reporting

Every incident comes with a report that includes operator notes and HD video. We keep 30 to 90 days of footage, and operators can search all your cameras in under 5 seconds. That gives your safety, insurance and investigation teams a clear record.

A better fit than guards for remote ground

Sending guards to a remote site is costly, and one guard can't watch a whole pit or yard. Clients save up to 70% compared with on-site guards. If you still need someone on site, guards are available as a secondary option. Our service is insurance-approved and comes with a 30-Day Performance Guarantee.

"Over the year we have had countless jobsite robbery attempts, and Secure Defence's equipment and trained staff handled everything promptly and professionally resulting in no property theft or damage. There are not enough companies out there like Secure Defence anymore. Highly recommended."
