Crane climbing detection is an add-on to our 24/7 live video monitoring. Cameras watch the base and mast of your tower crane. AI flags anyone who gets close, and a trained, licensed operator checks the live video and talks them down before they get far.
Secure Defence has protected job sites since 2015. Live video monitoring is what we do. Our operators watch your cameras live from our own command centre in Richmond, BC, and they step in the moment something is wrong. We're the Fastest Growing Security Company in Canada, the highest-ranked security company on both The Globe and Mail and BIV growth lists for 2025 and 2026. We have 500+ customers and 1,000+ sites live monitored across Western Canada. Metro Vancouver is our home market, and construction site security is one of our two biggest areas of work.
Crane climbing has become a dare for thrill-seekers. People climb at night, film it on their phones and post it online. A fence slows them down, but a fence can't see them or speak to them.
For a general contractor, one climber can turn into a lot of trouble:
The best time to stop a climber is before their feet leave the ground. That's what this service is built for.
We set detection zones around the crane base, the mast and the ladder. Our AI detection picks out a person entering those zones during your monitored hours, and the alert goes straight to our command centre.
A trained operator looks at the live video right away. Is it a climber, or the site super doing a late check? Birds, blowing tarps and swaying lights don't get escalated, because a person checks every alert. That's how we keep zero false alarms.
If someone shouldn't be there, the operator speaks to them through an on-site speaker: "This is private property. Get off the crane and leave now." If they keep going, the siren and strobes come on. Our voice-down and audio deterrents end most attempts right there.
If the person keeps climbing or won't leave, a supervisor calls police with a description of the person and where they are on the crane, and stays on the line until help arrives. This is Verified Police Response: police hear from a person who is watching it happen, not from an unconfirmed alarm. Our verified response takes about one minute. You get an incident report with operator notes and HD video for your safety, insurance and legal files.

Good crane coverage starts at the ground. We usually place cameras to watch:
Cameras go on wooden or metal poles or on the structure, and run on site power. Every powered site gets a 24-hour backup power system, so an outage doesn't leave the crane blind. Our equipment is rated to -40°C for winter work. Pole cameras go live in 5 to 7 days, and if you already have cameras, they can connect to our command centre the same day.
Crane coverage works best as one part of a monitored site. The same operators watch your perimeter, gate and equipment, so a climber who came over the fence is usually spotted before they reach the crane.
Most of our crane work is in Metro Vancouver, where towers go up in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and Surrey. See our Vancouver construction site security page. We also cover high-rise and mid-rise projects across Western Canada, including Calgary and Edmonton.
Crane risk isn't only a construction issue. If you manage a mixed-use project or a building beside an active site, see our strata and property management security and commercial and industrial pages.
"Over the year we have had countless jobsite robbery attempts, and Secure Defence's equipment and trained staff handled everything promptly and professionally resulting in no property theft or damage. There are not enough companies out there like Secure Defence anymore. Highly recommended." Branden McLean, Superintendent
Tell us about your project and your crane, and we'll plan coverage for the whole site, from the gate to the top of the mast. If you'd like to see the full service first, read about our 24/7 live video monitoring.
