Construction Security and Site Monitoring in Vancouver

A Vancouver job site has more to protect than a fence line. There's the gate, the laydown yard, the sea cans, the crane, the hoarding along the sidewalk and the people who come and go every day. Secure Defence handles construction security in Vancouver as one plan, built around live video monitoring and run by trained, licensed operators 24/7.

We started in Vancouver 11 years ago and it's still our biggest market. Our command centre is in Richmond, and we protect sites across all of Western Canada.

Start with a free site assessment and we'll map out a plan for your site.

A busy region with a lot on the ground

Metro Vancouver started 27,185 homes in 2025, according to CMHC, only 3% fewer than in 2024 (CMHC, housing starts December 2025). More than 9 in 10 of those starts were something other than a single detached house, mostly larger multi-unit buildings that stay under construction for a long time. Thieves know what's on those sites. In April 2026, Surrey police arrested four people after interrupting an attempted copper wire theft (CTV News). Copper, tools, fuel and small equipment are the usual targets, and a single loss can hold up a pour or an inspection.

The layers of a site security plan

We start with a free site assessment and design the plan around your site, your schedule and your insurer's requirements. A typical Vancouver plan has these layers.

1. Perimeter. Cameras placed so every fence line, gate and hoarding panel is in view. Smart detection flags anyone crossing after hours.

2. Gate and access control. Gate access control with keycards, phones or remote opening, so subtrades and deliveries get in without a key being copied. Every opening is logged.

3. Vehicles. LPR (licence plate recognition) records each plate at the gate, which helps when a truck shows up at 2 am or a vehicle keeps circling the block.

4. High value areas. Extra cameras on sea cans, the fuel tank, the copper cage and the tool crib.

5. The crane. Crane climbing detection for towers that attract climbers.

6. Fire and water. Early fire detection and flood and water leak sensors for sites where a small problem overnight could become a big claim.

7. Assets that move. GPS and cargo tracking for equipment or material that leaves the yard.

8. People on site. Guards are available as a secondary option for shifts where the plan needs boots on the ground.

Monitoring that runs the plan

Every layer reports to our command centre, where operators watch live. When someone breaks in, the operator warns them through a speaker, then sets off the siren and strobes. If a crime is confirmed, we call for Verified Police Response and stay on the line. That's how we keep a 1-minute verified response with zero false alarms, and why clients see 98%+ overall crime reduction. The full process is on our live video monitoring page.

Monitoring also helps during the day. At the start of each shift, operators can run a virtual walk of the site to check for fence breaches and obvious safety hazards before the crew arrives, which supports your WorkSafeBC responsibilities.

Reporting for owners, insurers and police

Security monitoring is only as useful as the records it leaves behind. After every incident you get a report with operator notes, times, the steps taken and HD video. Project managers forward them to owners. Insurers use them for claims. Police get the footage they need for charges. Our system is insurance-approved, which matters when a builder's risk policy asks how the site is protected after hours.

Setup timeline

  • Assessment and quote: 24 to 48 hours.
  • Existing site cameras: usually connected the same day.
  • Pole cameras on site power: live in 5 to 7 days, with a 24-hour backup power system.
  • Sites with no power yet: a solar camera tower in 24 hours, with a 2-week battery that holds in winter.

The plan changes as the building goes up. We move cameras and add layers between excavation, structure and finishing.

FAQ

What does construction site security monitoring include?

It's a complete plan for your site: monitored perimeter cameras, gate access control, LPR, extra coverage on high value areas, optional crane, fire and water sensors, GPS tracking, and guards as a secondary option, all watched live from our command centre.

Can monitoring help with WorkSafeBC responsibilities?

It can support them. Operators can run a virtual walk of the site at the start of each shift to look for fence breaches and obvious hazards before your crew arrives.

What records do I get after an incident?

You get an incident report with operator notes, times, the steps taken and HD video, ready for your owner, insurer or police.

Is your monitoring accepted by insurers?

Our system is insurance-approved. Check your own policy for its specific requirements, and we can supply the details your insurer asks for.

Do you still provide security guards?

Yes, as a secondary option. Most sites rely on live monitoring and add guards only for specific shifts or events.

How quickly can a plan be in place?

We complete the assessment and quote in 24 to 48 hours. Pole cameras go live in 5 to 7 days, existing cameras usually connect the same day, and a solar tower can be up in 24 hours where there's no power.
