A stolen load of copper in Langford doesn't get replaced the next morning. The new stock often has to come over on the ferry, and the trade waiting on it may not be free again for weeks. That's why Island builders and property managers bring in Secure Defence: we stop the theft while it's happening, so the job keeps moving.
We provide security camera monitoring on Vancouver Island, from the West Shore to Nanaimo and up-Island. Construction sites are one half of the work. The other half is property: strata and rental apartment buildings, shopping centres, strip malls, industrial yards and warehouses. Our licensed operators watch it all from our own command centre in Richmond, our home base across the Strait in Metro Vancouver.
A Victoria construction site or a Nanaimo commercial build faces a few problems that mainland jobs mostly don't.
Longer lead times after a theft. Materials, tools and equipment often arrive by ferry, so replacing one stolen load can stall an Island job far longer than it would in the Lower Mainland.
Trades are harder to reschedule. If a break-in pushes one trade back, the next may not have an opening again for weeks.
Remote up-Island sites. Outside town centres, sites go silent at night, sit far from the closest police detachment, and are easy to walk onto unseen.
No power on early-phase lots. New subdivisions and rural properties can go months without hydro or internet, so ordinary cameras won't work.
Live monitoring answers all four. When an operator talks to someone the second they cross the fence, nothing leaves the site. Island property managers have their own version of this: a strata parkade, strip mall or industrial yard that goes quiet after dark, an hour's drive from anyone who could check on it.
Every Island camera is watched from our 24/7 command centre in Richmond, on the mainland. With remote video monitoring, the operator's location doesn't matter. Your Island site gets the same people, the same steps and the same 1-minute verified response as a building in Vancouver.
Pole-mounted cameras. On most Island jobs we mount cameras on a pole or the building and draw from the site's own power; a 24-hour backup power system covers any outage. They're typically live in 5 to 7 days, and we can shorten that when a project calls for it.
Solar/LTE towers. For a lot with neither power nor a connection, solar camera towers bring solar panels, lithium-ion batteries with 2 weeks of runtime and no sun, and high-speed 5G internet. Satellite internet is used only where cell coverage drops out. That makes them a natural fit for new lots and up-Island sites.
Response. If an intruder ignores us, we phone the right local police service, whether that's Saanich Police, VicPD, Oak Bay, Central Saanich or the area's RCMP detachment, with a verified report.
Since a human confirms every alert, there are zero false alarms. A recording-only camera tells you what went missing yesterday, and a guard can only cover one corner of a site. We see every camera at once and respond in the moment, which is why clients see crime drop by 98% or more.
Island councils publish their permit and development files, and our SiteRadar platform turns them into a project list. On October 19, 2026, it had 813 projects on its list for Vancouver Island:
| Area | Projects tracked | Largest municipalities |
|---|---|---|
| Greater Victoria and West Shore | 588 | Langford 290, Saanich 168, Victoria 88, Esquimalt 26 |
| Nanaimo region | 221 | Nanaimo 193, Parksville 17, Regional District of Nanaimo 10 |
| Comox Valley and Cowichan | 4 | Courtenay 2, Duncan 2 |
The bulk are still in approvals. Commercial is the most common type (130), then multi-family (115) and single-family (72). Each becomes a live job site when ground breaks, and many end up as strata or commercial buildings.

Statistics Canada's police-reported numbers for 2024 show crime falling on the Island, though Nanaimo remains above the national average.
Nanaimo census metropolitan area. Crime Severity Index of 106.7 in 2024, down 16% from 2023. That was the fifth-largest drop of any Canadian metro area, but still well above the national figure of 77.9.
Victoria census metropolitan area (13 municipalities, including Victoria, Saanich and Langford): Crime Severity Index of 71.0 in 2024, down 11%.
